I passed the summer of 1816 in the environs of Geneva.
The season was cold and rainy, and in the evenings we crowded around a blazing wood fire, and occasionally amused ourselves with some Germans stories of ghosts, which happened to fall in our hands.
These tales exited in us a playful desire of imitation. Two other friends and myself agreed to write each a story, founded on some supernatural occurrence.
The weather however, suddenly became serene; and my two friends left me on a journey among the Alps, and lost, in the magnificent scenes which they present, all memory of the ghostly visions.
The following tale is the only one which has been completed.

Cursed Creator
02:16
|
|
||
Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live?
Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed?
I know not;
despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were those of rage and revenge.
I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants, and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery.

SECOND HAND HUMAN
I am a Second Hand Human
with a second hand BRAIN
a second hand LIFE
and a second hand NAME
I am a second hand HUMAN
with a second hand FACE
a second hand DREAM
and a second hand GRACE
/Refrain 1/
I am following the Rules
all the contracts
You may respect
'cause I'm a Second Hand Human
'm a second hand FILE
Have a second hand LOVE
and a second hand SMILE
/Refrain 2/
I Obey the Rules of Fear
And I do my best
To Fulfill Your Aim
And I Repeat,
Always the same
And I repeat Always the Same...

When Night Came
11:28
|
|
||
When night came, I quitted my retreat, an wondered in the woods;and now, no longer restrained by the fear of discovery, I gave vent to my anguish in fearful howlings.
I was like a wild beast that had broken the toils; destroying the objects that obstructed me, and ranging through the wood with a stag-like swiftness.
Oh! what a miserable night I passed! the cold stars shone in mockery, and the bare trees waved their branches above me: now and then the sweet voice of a bird burst forth amidst the universal stillness.
All, save I, were at rest or in enjoyment: I, like the arch fiend, bore a hell within me; and finding myself unsympathized with, wished to tear up the trees, spread havoc and destruction around me, and then to have set down and enjoyed the ruin

MUTABILITY
(Percy Shelley, as quoted by Mary Shelley in
the Modern Prometheus, 1818)
We Rest
A Dream has Power
To Poison Sleep
We Rise
A Wandering Thought
Pollutes the Day
We Feel. Conceive or Reason
We Laugh or Weep, Embrace
Fond Woe, or Cast Our Dreams Away…
It is the same
for be it Joy or Sorrow
The Path of its Departure
Still is Free
Man's Yesterday
May Never Be like his Tomorrow,
Nough may endure but
Mutability

Farewell
02:21
|
|
||
"Farewell! I leave you, and in you the last of human kind whom these eyes will ever behold.
Farewell, Frankenstein! If tou wert yet alive, and yet cherished a desire of revenge against me, it would better satiated in my life than in my destruction.
But it was not so; Thou didst seek my extinction, that I might not cause greater wretchedness. (...) .Blasted as thou wert, my agony was still superior to thine;for the bitter sting of remorse may not cease to rankle in my wounds until death shall close them forever.
But soon, I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt.
Soon these burning miseries will be extinct.
I shell ascend my funeral pile triumphantly, and exalt in the agony of the torturing flames.
The light of that conflagration will fade away;
my ashes will be swept into the sea by the winds. My spirit will sleep in peace.
Farewell."
